Fuller’s Index Plus shows the dates for the Hollywood Race/Sports Book at 115 N. 1st as follows:
Hollywood (0) Race Book  9/9/1954 to ? (Richard Sheridan- deferred)
Hollywood (1) Race Book 5/10/1966 - 1/27/1981
Hollywood (2) Race  Book  10/1/1975 - 12/31/1980
Hollywood (3) Race and Sports Book 1/27/1981 - 10/24/1983
Hollywood (4) Race and Sports Book 4/5/1984 - 6/30/1985

The records of the Nevada Gaming Commision and related newspaper articles from the time show a lot of activity for this establishment. There were many people licensed and shareholders over the years.  Some are well known early Las Vegas names and some are not so well known.

There was also some interesting debates about public telephones at the location.  Today we debate on-line gambling but in the 1950's and 1960's they debated race wires and telephone communications that could affect the betting lines on races.

There were many deferrals because the commission last month repealed a regulation requiring a first reading of applications the first meeting after filing and a second reading 30 days later.

A discussion followed concerning the action to be taken on four pending applications for race for sports pool operations in the Las Vegas area. Board members began an inquiry during the past month int operations of three such establishments already operating in the Las Vegas area. Mr. Hancock said the  results of the study to date were not conclusive yet as to showing whether the Las Vegas area can successfully absorb additional race books and sports pools. Mr. Cahill said it seemed to him only logical to wonder if existing race books and sports pool establishments aren't compelled to accept out-of-state bets to stay in business. The more you get, the more this is apt to happen. Mr. Sinnott questioned what purpose a race book serves in Nevada in the first place.

Mr. Loomis, observed, however, that race books had been legalized by the legislature and that efforts to outlaw them had failed in the session.
Mr. Cahill stated further that he personally felt that the Board ought to avoid the economic aspects of the problem and confine itself to the public interest question involved.

Mr. Sinnott made a motion, which was seconded and unanimously passed, that the Board defer the pending race and sports book applications for further clarification of the whole picture, and that Mr. Gallagher be instructed to contact the books and ask them to explain their long distance and toll charges, and that in the future the Board obtain from the licensee a waiver to enable monitoring of his business line and access to his telephone records.

RACEBOOK TELEPHONES
Mr. Gallagher stated that he had received an application from the Hollywood Racebook for a pay phone for the convenience of its customers. Mr. Gallagher suggested that action be withheld on this application in order that a resurvey can be made of the phone situation as related to racebooks in Nevada and a physical examination of the premises, with a report back to the Board. Board members Cahill and Sinnott concurred with this suggestion.
